What Does Valentine’s Day Mean To You?
Valentine’s day can find it’s origins during the third and fourth century in Roman culture on what is now February 13th a pagan holiday honoring the god Lupercus who watched over and protected the herdsman and their animals.
At this time, young single men would pick the name of young single women from a box and they would they would be responsible for that single women for one year.
The Christian church opted to alter the concentration point from a Roman god to Saint Valentine, who was a Christian saint. By the 14th century, he was love’s patron saint. King Henry VII in 1537 declared that England would honor February 14th as ?Saint Valentine’s Day.? This would be a day for pals and those in love to trade little presents of flowers and candy.
Gifting flowers has its roots centuries back in several cultures and has created it’s individual secret language.
In western civilization, Valentine’s Day has become a special day because it is considered the proper time for a guy or girl to give gifts to express their desire for that special person in their life.
During the Victorian era propriety dictated discretion when two lovers wanted to declare their feelings to each other. A gift of a bouquet of flowers would be accepted as proper, the choice of flowers in the bouquet would send a message to be read by those who knew the language.
If there was an iris included, it would tell the one receiving it that a message was provided in the bouquet, violets expressed that you were in the sender’s thoughts, baby’s breath expressed eternal love, and mums demonstrated that you spoke truthfully.
The direction of the flowers has added meaning. Those that are tilted to the left represented the sender while flowers tilted to the right represented the receiver. Also, how the recipient held the bouquet could send a message to the sender.
