Birthday Gift Ideas – For Those Who Leave It Late

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Most people do not set out to buy a birthday present at the last minute, but for one reason or another, it happens. With time limited, maybe you have just an hour or two to come up with something, what are your options?

If you need to buy a birthday present for a woman then buying a nice bouquet of flowers is definitely acceptable. Few women are unhappy to receive flowers on any occasion. They are not really suitable for men, but you could opt for a cool house plant instead, which you would just about get away with. If you are not sure what to choose, then ask the florist to make a recommendation to you. Alternatively, if you order them online, you should be able to choose from a range of special birthday bouquets.

Instead of flowers, or in addition to them, you can buy a special box of chocolates or candies. Note the word ’special’, because just buying any ones from the nearest supermarket will not make a very impression on the person that you are giving them to. Then there are cakes too, which everyone loves, especially on their birthday. If you have two hours and any baking experience then it is best to make it yourself – your friend or family member will really appreciate that. Buying one from a bakery is perfectly ok though, as there are great ones to choose from. Spending an extra dollar or two to have it personalized with a message is a must.

Now That They’re Old Enough the Gift of Being Eighteen (18th Birthday Gifts)

Thursday, June 10th, 2010
18th birthday gifts are probably the trickiest birthday gifts to choose. You need something that’s big enough to mark the occasion but still shows you’ve put some thought into it rather than just splashing the cash. You’ve also got to pick something that’s grown-up enough to be suitable for an 18th birthday, but fun enough that the recipient doesn’t feel over the hill.

When somebody turns 18, they gain all sorts of legal powers. As well as being considered an adult by the legal system, they also get the right to vote, marry without permission, open a bank account without a parent’s signature, or even do jury service. Of course, for most people, once they’ve opened their 18th birthday gifts, the celebrations soon turn to another new right: alcohol.

While you can legally enter a pub aged 14 and have beer or cider bought for you to eat with a meal from the age of 16, the day you turn 18 marks the first time you can legally buy alcohol yourself – though it’s very bad form to allow somebody to reach into their pocket for a drink on their own birthday!

Instead of (or as well as) standing a round at the local for the birthday celebrations, you can choose from a range of booze-related 18th birthday gifts. Champagne and whiskey are both popular, but wine is another option, while you could always give gifts that will last – such as shot glasses. You can also choose from a range of creative drinking games, complete with props and other accessories.

If you’re looking for 18th birthday Gifts that the recipient will remember forever, it’s worth thinking about buying an experience rather than an object. Your imagination is pretty much the only limit here. It doesn’t have to be high-adrenaline activities such as paintballing or skydiving: you can opt for more cultural events like theatre trips or even a makeover and fashion shoot.

As an alternative way to pick 18th birthday gifts, you might want to choose something that marks the day they were born. These can include newspapers from the day, which are sure to have some type of memorable event. Not only will the recipient find this an interesting and personal gift, but if you are the parent, it will be a great piece of nostalgia. Then again, you might even see some news you never heard about at the time – after all, you were pretty busy on that particular day!

If you gave someone driving lessons for their 17th birthday – and assuming they paid off – it might be time to take the next step. There are plenty of 18th birthday gifts for car lovers, ranging from model cars to special driving experiences where they can drive anything from a go-kart to a Lamborghini or even a double-decker bus!

There are all sorts of possible 18th birthday gifts which can be personalised for the lucky boy or girl. You could get them small gifts like a calendar or mug, or splash out on anything from a bottle of champagne to naming a star – just like Curly Watts did for Raquel in Coronation Street. If that’s not enough, you can even buy a plot of land on the moon!

If you’re buying for a sports lover, you shouldn’t have much trouble picking 18th birthday gifts. Whatever their favourite game, you can choose anything from hands-on experiences to personalised keepsakes to novelty items. A good idea for football fans is a book with old newspaper articles about their favourite side. These days you can get them for dozens of different teams, so you don’t have to worry if the person you are buying for supports a team which hasn’t always been bathed in glory!

For truly personalised 18th birthday gifts, you should think about something which incorporates a photo. If you’re feeling kind, pick a recent picture showing the recipient as a mature adult; if you’re feeling a little meaner, find the most embarrassing childhood photo that they’d tried to forget. Such gifts are no longer limited to mugs and t-shirt: you can now get everything from sunglasses cases to Hollywood director-style chairs with any photograph you like printed on them.

If you’re still stuck for original ideas, or are looking for cheaper 18th birthday gifts which are the equivalent of a stocking-filler, don’t forget there are plenty of gifts which are either useful or fun, practical or cute, serious or just plain silly.

Gifts For Young People Turning 21

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Most young people eagerly anticipate their 21st birthday. Who can blame them? The 21st birthday is a significant birthday. For many young people, it is the beginning of the rest of their lives. As friends and family, we need to make sure that the gift we give to that special young person is appropriate for a young person turning 21.

Some stores have a special section of gifts for 21st birthdays. This may prove to be very helpful to you. Also, many event managers have special themes and ideas for 21st birthday parties.

As you might expect, these parties often focus on the new freedoms given to that special teen. Sometimes, the guests are encouraged to wear costumes to show their freedom. This can at times lead to some very interesting sights, sometimes seeming almost absurd.

A gift that seems to be of great significance is the key. The key is said to symbolize St. Peter, who is said to be the guardian of the gates of Heaven. This symbolic key is to unlock the gates of restraint and give the user complete freedom to do whatever they want.

A Few Various Birthday Ideas For One To Think About

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

If you are the one who is being put in charge of planning a birthday then you might feel a little for ideas at first. Not to worry though, here are some birthday ideas for you to consider.

First of all, you are going to have to consider whose birthday it is that you are planning for. You are not going to plan the same birthday for your mum as you will for your best friend, for example. You are also going to have to think about a budget and how much you are wanting to spend on arranging anything as well as how much people are going to want to spend on the actual day. With these thoughts in mind, lets look into a couple of different ideas that you could try.

The most common thing to do for a birthday is simply to arrange a house party for them. This is common for several reasons. First of all it is very easy and all you need to do is to invite all of the guests and get them to come at the right time. Secondly it can be as cheap as you like and all you need to really do is buy in some snacks and drinks and have a good time.

Online Services Make Personalising Birthday Cards Easy

Monday, April 26th, 2010

A personalised card is the best way to let somebody that you know that you are thinking of them on their birthday. It is a great way of communicating your feelings towards them about how much you respect your relationship with them. Birthday cards are not hard to find these days as they are available in supermarkets, gas stations and on the Internet, as well as traditional greeting card stores. The problem is that most of the ones available are either boring or not at all relevant to the person that you want to give it to.

A lot of thought needs to go into choosing the right card for the right person. Picking up any card shows an unwelcome, thoughtless attitude. A personalised birthday card would be the perfect way to obtain a card customised for the person and the occasion, showing you have put thought and effort into the process. You have two options as far as personalised birthday cards go – make your own or use a personalised card service. If you are a creative type of person, and can find an hour or two to make a card, then that is a good thing to do.

What Makes the Perfect Birthday Gift?

Thursday, March 11th, 2010
I remember a time when I was about five or six when birthdays were just the best day of the year. I would wait for months and months to have all my friends come over for a big party with lots of junk food, videos and games. And of course there were the presents!

Skip about three decades since then and birthdays are probably now just about the most dreaded day of the year. I do not need a reminder that I am getting older. Every year though, my husband insists that we celebrate, together with friends and family around. Unfortunately, I just do not have that same excitement and anticipation I did when I was a kid. Even most of the gifts are more of a let down than anything else.

There are probably two reasons that I am always a bit disappointed when it comes to gifts on my birthday. Number one is that now that I am older, I can actually go out and buy myself whatever I feel I need or want. I am earning my own money, unlike when I was six and had to rely on my parents.  If there is a gorgeous new sweater I saw in the shops or that latest CD that just came out, I make sure I put money aside to buy it.

The second reason why birthdays are always an anticlimax is probably the biggest. For all my 34 years in existence one would think that my nearest and dearest know me well enough to buy me “the perfect birthday present”.

I understand that coming up with an unusual gift idea is not so simple. So what makes the “perfect birthday present”?

Remember, the best gifts do not have to be the most expensive

Unique birthday gifts require time and thought

Add an element of surprise to birthdays. It is always encouraging (and takes away from moping about your age)

Incorporate presents that express one’s love and gratitude

Choose a gift that can be cherished for years to come

I must admit that not all the presents my loved ones have given me over the years were disappointing. One of the most unusual birthday gifts I ever received was a gift called The Friendship Stone. This is a stone I hold onto at all times and carry it with me in my purse. It was given to me by my best friend of 30 years, on my birthday prior to her immigrating with her husband. It is a semi-precious Tiger’s Eye gemstone originating from Western South Africa. Whenever I miss her (and I do very often), I look at this Friendship Stone. It reminds me of those precious childhood moments and I realize that even though she is far away, I carry our bond of friendship all the time. This is truly one of those “perfect presents”.  It is like being given an engagement ring by your fiancé although this is for friends or family, and costs a hell of a lot less money.

Since I was given the Friendship Stone, I realize that the true beauty of birthdays lies more in just being able to celebrate it with my nearest and dearest, than the presents themselves. With all my frustration at the years slipping by, the bonds created from a lifetime together are worth more than any actual gift they could buy me.  I am hoping for many more birthdays ahead!

Marking Your 21st the Celebrity Way (21st Birthday Gifts)

Sunday, February 21st, 2010
Even today, when the occasion doesn’t have any legal significance, most people want to make a big deal of their 21st birthday. For those with fame and fortune, it seems a ceremonial “key to the door” and a bottle of champagne aren’t enough in the way of 21st birthday gifts: they want wild parties with glitz and glamour.

None more so than Pirates of the Caribbean star Keira Knightly – She held a 1920s themed party where 150 guests each got a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne and a selection of caviar – let’s just hope none of them skimped on her 21st birthday gifts! The bubbly wasn’t all that was on offer: it’s reported the tequila was flowing freely, which may explain why Keira left early the next morning wearing a pig mask.

Basketball superstar Lebron James actually managed to top Keira’s bash, arriving in a black Rolls Royce at a private dinner for 65 close friends. He then held a party for a thousand guests who each paid up to £150 to attend, with the proceeds going to charity. And you can’t accuse Lebron of being a soft touch: being born on 30 December, he warned guests not to pass off Christmas gifts among his 21st birthday gifts.

Vegas seems to be the home for many celebrity 21sts, though singer Ashlee Simpson went a step further by performing two songs from her new album at her own party. Then again, 21st birthday gifts weren’t the only thing on her mind: she was also preparing for an MTV special dedicated to her birthday.

Not all Vegas parties go so smoothly though. Kelly Osbourne didn’t expect her 21st birthday gifts to include a $102,000 bill for damages to a hotel suite. But that’s what she got after Paris Hilton’s then-boyfriend Stavros Niarchos reportedly went on the rampage and smashed valuable furniture. The two singers exchanged barbed words in the press for weeks afterwards.

Lindsay Lohan avoided that type of chaos by cancelling a two-day long celebration in a Vegas nightclub which, at one point, was going to be sponsored by the vodka manufacturer Svedka. That went out the window when Lindsay checked herself into rehab. Instead she held a quiet beach barbecue serving non-alcoholic drinks and bottled water.

Our own British stars are also used to high-profile parties, but none so much as Amir Khan. The Olympic silver medallist had no sooner opened his 21st birthday gifts than he had to go to a jam-packed Bolton Arena where a hometown crowd watched him defend his Commonwealth lightweight title. Fortunately the birthday boy’s party wasn’t delayed too long: he knocked out challenger Graham Earl in just 72 seconds!

Prince Harry kept a lower profile with a quiet celebration at Windsor Castle. He probably wasn’t really in a party mood having recently caused controversy by dressing in a Nazi uniform at a fancy dress do. Hopefully none of his family bought his 21st birthday Gifts with cash as it could have been a strange experience: the Royal Mint marked the occasion by releasing a £5 coin which was the first to feature Harry.

Big Brother star Luke Marsden also had a quiet 21st. He celebrated his birthday in the famous house with a party for him and three fellow housemates. He didn’t get any 21st birthday gifts – in fact, though he didn’t know it, his girlfriend marked the occasion by publicly dumping him after he’d kissed fellow contestant Rebecca Shiner!

Sometimes it feels like celebrities lead lives so outlandish you couldn’t write better stories. But it’s worth remembering that some fictional characters have also received some unwelcome 21st birthday gifts.

Frederic, the star of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera The Pirates of Penzance, thought he’d celebrate his 21st birthday by becoming free from the band of pirates he’d spent his entire life with (his mother had misheard the offer and thought she’d apprenticed him as a pilot.) Unfortunately for Frederic, he was born on 29 February and the pirates, sticklers for accuracy, pointed out that he wouldn’t earn his freedom for another 63 years!

In the hit offbeat drama Reaper, lead character Sam Oliver’s 21st birthday gifts include some unwelcome news from his parents. It turns out they did a deal with the devil by which he cured them of sickness in return for promising him their first-born child – and today is collection time!

Both the graphic novel series The Darkness, and the video game of the same name, feature the character Jackie Estacado. His 21st birthday gifts are somewhat overshadowed by the discovery that the New York mafia is attempting to blow him up. However, he manages to avoid assassination thanks to the fact that turning 21 also triggers supernatural powers passed down from his ancestors.
